Liepāja Young People Visit the Baltics’ Most Modern Prison as Part of the “Learn Construction” Campaign

On 19 September 2025, as part of the “Learn Construction” campaign organized by the Building Design and Construction Council association, young people had the opportunity to visit the most modern detention facility in the Baltic states – Liepāja Prison. Shortly before its official opening, Liepāja Prison was visited by pupils from senior classes of Liepāja Secondary School No. 6 and Liepāja Gymnasium No. 1. Gunita Jansone, a representative of the campaign organizers, opened the discussion by informing the young people about the many professions related to construction – from architect to specialized fields in design and works execution, while Māris Feldmanis, a construction supervisor from SIA Firma L4, one of the country’s leading engineering consultancy companies, and Mārcis Štēbelis, works manager at the Liepāja construction company UPTK, shared their own motivation for choosing construction and their job duties.

The new prison is located outside the centre of Liepāja on a 30.5-hectare plot of land. Its total floor area is 38 099.9 square metres. The prison complex includes two residential units for inmates, an education and employment centre, an administration and access-control building, a special-regime and hospital unit, as well as an open-type prison.
